These Toronto-based news stations need to wake up and realize that they aren't the center of the atmosphere! Why weren't their cameras rolling up in my home town of New Liskeard, Ontario during the holidays when at times the mercury dipped below -30°C not to mention the added windchill which made it feel more like -45°C. But, since Torontonians consider Northern Ontario to start approximately around the New Market, Ontario area, it's not surprising that some of them think that we (those who ACTUALLY live in NORTHERN ONTARIO) live in igloos.
Unfortunately, as soon as a dusting of snow falls on Toronto (I don't mean to pick on Toronto because it's pretty much the same in any big city, even Ottawa), the pile ups of cars begin to appear around the city causing chaos for commuters and police alike.
Here's my point: Canada is well known around the world for its cold temperatures and the record snowfall dumped on us, throughout the country. When these nationally televised news stories air about how Torontonians think it's the end of the world when their temperature dips below -10°C in January, the rest of Canada rightfully ridicule their whining. Not only do (many, not all) Torontonians already think that their city is the center of the universe; we also have the media airing these ridiculous stories that only furthers this state of mind.
No matter where you live in this great country, all Canadians should be able to get through the harsh (or the not so harsh) Canadian winters and be proud of our diverse climate and the fact that we don't need to call in the Army (as did the British in the past couple days) every time we have a major snowstorm.
