Here's what the SFUO Constitution 2008-2009 has to say about slates:
4.7 Slates
4.7.1
No candidate for a position on the executive or the Board of Administration may form a slate with one or more other candidates running for positions on the executive or the Board of Administration. To that effect, no candidate may:
a. spend money together with one or more other candidates; or
b. participate in any way in the campaign of one or more other candidates.
So, if I may direct your attention to the above screen shot of Sameena Topan's BOA campaign website and then to article 4.7.1.b. Is it fair then to say that Topan having Hammett's campaign video on her website (even though when you try to play the video, a black screen appears and says "This is a private video. If you have been sent this video, please make sure you accept the sender's friend request" would contravene article 4.7.1.b?

Brandon - BOA candidates are allow to endorse a candidate for an executive position.
ReplyDeleteI'm quoting from the SFUO Constitution. That's not what IT seems to be saying. If they were aloud to endorse executive candidates, why does article 4.7.1.b state that no executive or BOA candidates may participate in any way in the campaign of one or more other candidates? A campaign video is a campaign tool... Hammett's campaign video appears on Topan's campaign website... In other words, Topan is participating in Hammett's campaign. This is how I enterpret article 4.7.1.b. Endorsing somebody and participating in somebody else's campaign are two different issues.
ReplyDeleteWham Bam Thank You Mam'
ReplyDeleteI was told so long as I was an official volunteer of Amy Hammett, which I am, I can endorse her by promoting her and her platform, along with promoting myself. I am all up in this video, I posted it for my benefit as much as hers. Wait 'til you see it! It's freaking awesome!
ReplyDelete5.4 A person can volunteer on one campaign at every level. This means that a person
ReplyDeletemay volunteer for a referendum committee, a candidate running for an executive
position, a candidate running for the Board of Administration and a candidate
running for the University Senate at the same time. However, a person may not
volunteer for two candidates running at the same level. For instance, a person
may not help two separate candidates running for executive positions.
5.5 A candidates can volunteer on one campaign at every level in which she is not
herself a candidate. This means that a candidate running for the BOA for
example may volunteer for a referendum committee, a candidate running for an
executive position, and a candidate running for the University Senate at the same
time. However, a candidate may not volunteer for another candidate running for a
position at the same level. For instance, a candidate running for the BOA may not
volunteer for another candidate running for the BOA.
Sameena has every right to help Hammett.
Thanks for the clarification, Peter. I wasn't accusing Sameena of cheating but simply asking the question. Doesn't this rule still seem to contradict 4.7. though? It would technically allow candidates running for an executive position to legally team up with other BOA/Senate candidates and help each other campaign, right?
